For the 2 years that I’ve lived in Churchill Club, there’s been a problem with cars speeding down Bluegrass Parkway. We’re not talking 3-5mph over the limit in most cases either. No, from my office window I see folks cruising easily 35-40mph during the 6-8am and 4-6pm times, and this is a 25mph zone.
So I’ve tried the good citizen efforts of contacting the Oswego Police Department, and they have been kind to listen to me. But their excuse reasoning for not stepping up policing is that it really isn’t that bad. Apparently they’ve driven done the street a few times and haven’t seen any speeders, or they were only going 5-6mph over the limit, case closed. Never mind the fact that 5-6mph over a 25mph limit is like going 60mph in a 50mph zone…. Why have laws?!
2wks ago, they did have a patrol car pulling people over every day on the southwest end of Bluegrass, and that was great. But the real culprits are those going north towards Yoakum: with no stop signs beginning with the intersection with 5th street, it becomes a virtual racetrack to the Yoakum Blvd intersection. Imagine my delight to come home yesterday then and see a speed sign trailered on my street! Great news, right? Well, except for one thing: it’s pointed the wrong way!
In other words, it’s displaying speeds to drivers coming off of Yoakum Blvd (red star). Which isn’t the
problem – you’re slowing down to make the turn, and unless you’re in NASCAR, it’s unlikely that you will be going over 25mph at that point. Ideally, it should be pointed to display speeds of cars going north towards Yoakum Blvd (green star).
So, I called the police department and thanked them for the efforts they have been making. I then asked if they would consider turning the trailer in the opposite direction, stating the obvious about the traffic flow, etc. Again, it was pointed out to me that a) the traffic really isn’t that fast, and b) the trailer is really there more to build awareness, so the direction it’s facing doesn’t really matter. Oh, ok.
But, the officer did say that he’ll come down and take a look at it later today. We’ll see what happens. Am I missing something here?!
Update: well, they came by a couple hours later and just removed it all together. Laughable….
