IRS Internet Scam Surfaces Again

Oswego Police Department

An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) scam which first surfaced in April of this year has reappeared.  Oswego Police were made aware of a similar potential internet scam after a resident received an e-mail allegedly involving the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  The sent from address in the e-mail is “Department of the Treasury” at service@irsusa.com. The subject line states “Notice from the Department of Treasury”.

In the e-mail it explains that the resident is eligible to receive a tax refund and they needed to access a form by clicking on a link.  The link would then redirect the receiver to what is likely a “Phishing website”.  These websites are designed to obtain personal and financial information from innocent citizens which will then lead to Identity Theft.

Anyone who has been victimized by a scam is encouraged to contact their local police department.  We would like to remind residents to be cautious in situations where your personal information is being requested.
