“No nation ancient or modern ever lost the liberty of freely speaking, writing, or publishing their sentiments, but forthwith lost their liberty in general and became slaves.”
John Peter Zenger
It was just over a year ago that my family and I moved to Oswego. After living in the Chicagoland area for 10yrs, the thought of moving further west was not idyllic; not more than a dot on most maps, Oswegoland wasn’t necessarily on our list of places to consider. But, after spending time in the area and speaking to friends and acquaintances who had made the move, we decided it was worth the leap.
There was a sense of wonderment, that a community so close to the hubbub of the western suburbs could be so close yet quaintly removed from what has become a virtual sprawl of suburban landscape. Yes, there was the Starbucks (a personal requirement of mine) and more grocery, discount and hardware stores than seemingly possible for such a small area. But while not abandoning the accoutrements of modern convenience there is a sense that they are there out of necessities sake, not as daily fixtures to worship.
Over the past year, I’ve given thought to how might I become more aware of the Village of Oswego, and perhaps contribute back in a way that would privilege me to nurture a resource that capitalizes on my personal skills yet is freely given to the community. That is what The Oswego Post is: a platform for community sharing.
I believe that our society should not limit it’s ability to learn to a one-way dialogue by way of television, newspapers or radio. That the most natural and pure way of gaining knowledge is through the interaction with one another, in open and honest communication. We will strive to keep the content of The Oswego Post an open forum.
I’m not sure where this will go: I’ve made peace with the fact that these words and my effort may only be witnessed by few and appreciated even less. But I hope not. Please take the time to take it in, offer feedback, and if the notion strikes you, consider starting or participating in discussions.
Enjoy
